Paper weights and sizes

The weight (strength and thickness) of paper is measured in the number of grams per square metre. We call this the grammage. There are many different standard grammage weights. For example, paper can have a weight of:

  • 80 g
  • 100 g
  • 115 g
  • 130 g
  • 150 g
  • 170 g

From 180 g onwards, you speak of cardboard. There are also several standard paper sizes:

  • A1 – 594 x 840 mm
  • A2 – 420 x 594 mm
  • A3 – 297 x 420 mm
  • A4 – 210 x 297 mm
  • A5 – 148,5 x 210 mm
  • A6 – 105 x 148,5 mm
  • As you can see above, at each step the longest side is halved to move to the next size. From A5 to A6, the 210 mm is halved to 105 mm.
